Self Scientific new EP,including features from Talib Kweli, The Game, Krondon, Freddie Gibbs & Big K.R.I.T.
Trials Of The Blackhearted captures the societal angst and confusion of the current times, against a backdrop of menacing, and melodic soundscapes.
In Ancient Kemet they believed the heart was the organ that controlled thought, logic and knowledge. The weighing of the heart, against a feather, was used to determine if people were righteous or wicked during their time on earth. If their heart was heavier than the feather, the Heart was devoured. With the world rapidly changing, and evolving beyond recognition, people are becoming even more desensitized to the conditions we exist in. The most heinous acts are applauded as “interesting” and “entertaining” while genuine acts of love, and justice are shunned. We can sensationalize but we are scared of true emotion, we have more information now than ever before but no one wants to read. The truth is scary, it is easier to escape through our favorite vice, than to deal with the harsh reality of the present. Our hearts are heavy, our hearts are dark, these are the Trials Of The Blackhearted

As I was perusing the news on ESPN.com today (4/20/11), I saw that Lamar Odom won the Sixth Man Award for this season. I was vaguely aware that Odom was a 6th man. *shrugs* I’m not as into the NBA (especially the Lakers lol) as I am the NFL. As popular as he is, it would be easy for a casual basketball fan to assume he was a starter. But his popularity, it seems, is based less and less on his role with the Lakers and more on his role in reality television.
On Twitter, they call him Lamar Kardashian. His marriage to Khloe Kardashian sparked a tornado of criticism and gossip. Their relationship seemed doomed to fail yet, more than a year into it, they are apparently seeing great success. They just released a fragrance line called “Unbreakable” and are starring in a reality series on the E! network (spinoff of the show that started it all “Keeping Up With the Kardashians“).
I watched the season of the “Kardashians” which detailed the budding romance of Lamar and Khloe. It was intriguing to me that “the ugly sister” and this lame ball player were fielding so much negativity. First of all, Khloe is gorgeous. She may not have the dominant Armenian traits that Kim and Kourtney got from their father, and she may be tall and thick, but she is by no means ugly. If folk think she is ugly and fat, I can assume that I must look like Precious’ red-headed half-sister! Secondly, the fact that their relationship moved quickly is not a big deal. Some people just know what they want and don’t need society’s guidelines to dictate how they go about getting it.
Some try to play that Odom’s life is a Cinderella story. His mom died when he was twelve, he played for the LA Clippers, and one of his children died. These are all tragic events, but everyone faces death in their lives, although playing for the Clippers is a bit more than most could handle. He is a really good ball player. He was on the Olympic and All Star teams. He went on to play with the Heat and now the Lakers. Outside of basketball, he has other great business and charitable ventures as detailed in this article. He basically flew under the radar for so many years…until he crossed paths with the E! Network and they put his life on blast.
I’m glad to see today (4/22/11) that he is getting a lot more praise for his skills in the playoffs and for his personality on the reality show. It sucks that folk are so shallow that they let one man’s success bring out the worst in them. Reading tweets about why they hate him is sad (search “hate lamar odom“). It all boils down to the facts that he out plays their teams, is married to a famous/rich/pretty girl, and he is a really good guy. I choose to like him. Even if he is a Laker.
